How to Restore Curls in a Hair Topper

Caring for a curly topper or styling some curl into your hair piece will require different methods depending on the fiber it’s made of. We’ll share some tips for both synthetic and human hair toppers that’ll give you bouncy curls in no time!

Regular Synthetic

A great benefit of synthetic toppers is that the curl is baked into the fiber, so it will stay intact even after it gets wet. Your curls may need a little TLC if they start to lose their shape or smooth appearance, which is typical with normal wear. To reshape your curls, simply follow these steps:
  • Using T-pins, pin your hair topper to a block head and secure to a steady surface using a wig clamp. All three can be purchased in our Block Head Kit. *Pro tip: pin through the topper clips to avoid puncturing the base of the topper

  • Fill a spray bottle with part water and part conditioning spray and spritz the fiber which will help to reactivate and smooth the curls

  • Gently detangle using a wide tooth comb and detangling spray

  • Take sections of hair and twist in the direction of the original curl pattern. If you want tight ringlets, take smaller sections, and if you want looser curls, take larger sections. If you aren’t sure of the original curl pattern, try twisting the curls in different directions until you see them bounce back.

  • Set your curls with a light mist of holding spray

Heat Friendly Synthetic & Human Hair

One of the most convenient features of these two fibers is that they can be heat styled! Follow these steps to add curl back into your hair piece:
  • Using T-pins, pin your hair topper to a block head and secure to a steady surface using a wig clamp. All three can be purchased in our Block Head Kit. *Pro tip: pin through the topper clips to avoid puncturing the base of the topper

  • Gently detangle heat friendly synthetic fiber using a wide tooth comb and detangling spray. Use just a paddle brush on human hair.

  • Using a curling iron or wand with the temperature set to 275° Fahrenheit, curl sections of hair while keeping in mind that larger sections will create looser curls and smaller sections will create tighter ringlets.

  • Pin each curl and allow the hair to cool into the shape you’ve created (this is especially important for heat-friendly synthetic fiber!)

  • Lock in your heat-friendly synthetic curls with a light mist of holding spray or your human hair curls with a salon-grade hairspray

As always, be sure to use care products specifically formulated for each fiber and wash every 6-8 wears. This will keep the hair clean & moisturized, all while reducing those pesky tangles that can wreak havoc on curls over time.
